TYPES OF TRANSMISSION JOBS

When getting your transmission repaired there will typically be 3 different options you can choose from. We will detail the pros and cons of each option and how to navigate the best option that fits your needs.

Going with a new or remanufactured transmission is always going to be your best option as they typically offer the best quality, durability, and warranty. Flexors Remanufactured transmissions go through a rigorous process that includes disassembling each transmission, washing & cleaning all components, remanufacturing good worn parts to new condition or replacing all critical components that are worn or damaged with new (many times updated) parts.
All of our valve bodies and torque converters are remanufactured with the latest updates from the OE manufacturer to exhibit better than before performance. Each critical component has an assembly line where the specialists are trained to identify wear or damage to a part to ensure a thorough inspection. This is important because it allows the specialists to focus on the quality of one single part whereas a rebuilder will have to inspect over 800 parts and ultimately make mistakes.
Once our transmission is fully assembled our transmissions are put on a dyno meter and tested at over 200 different parameter that replicate daily driving conditions in cold & hot climates, with different pressure replicating inclines or declines and many other parameters which make our transmissions ISO-9001/TS-16949 Certified, the highest certification that a remanufacturer receives.
Once quality control has been completed our units are packaged in heavy duty crates and shipped out to our distribution warehouse and then shipped directly to your Flexor shop. Flexor offers 3 year, unlimited & 2-year unlimited mileage warranties on our transmission repairs.

A good transmission rebuild can vary in quality depending on a few factors. The transmission rebuilder’s ability to identify over 800 worn and damaged parts, the type/quality of parts being used, and utilizing the proper procedures to rebuild the transmission. These three factors will determine whether you got a quality transmission. Keep in mind that newer transmissions have more electrical components and many times require complex resetting or installation specifications that have very little room for error and with error can cause catastrophic damage to your transmission.
The next factor is pricing. Most shops will price their transmissions rebuilds out based on the total amount of parts that are damaged inside of the transmission and what the total cost of parts are. The fact is that no one will know until it is too late to back out to go for a better option. By then you are committed to thousands of dollars ultimately increasing the total cost of repair drastically from your original quote. There are also shops that will give you an all-in price without knowing what is damaged inside of your transmission. In this case I would warn you to be very wary. When rebuilders typically inspect a transmission when they are working with a budget, they will cut corners and reuse worn parts in order to profit from the price you were quoted.
Shortly after your warranty expires you can count on your transmission failing again resulting in a much worse position that you were in months ago. After your transmission is rebuilt and installed the quality control portion entails a 30-minute road test by the mechanic but the bulk of it the testing is done by you. You will be required to drive the vehicle during this break in process and may notice severe jerking, slipping, or bumping that can be involved in the break in. If the quality control fails you can risk being stranded on the side of the road, and potentially be in a dangerous situation.
Additionally getting your warranty repairs completed will put you through another 1–3-week process as many shops will put your vehicle on the back burner as they will prioritize new paying jobs. Rebuilds rarely end in a happy ending due to the complexity of the transmission these days. Transmissions nowadays are primarily computer operated and the mechanicals have a lesser role. For this reason, rebuilds will typically hold warranties of between 12 months & 24 months with mileage restrictions.

Yes, used transmissions in many cases is the cheapest option of the three. However, it can come at a steep price in the long run. Used transmissions are usually salvaged from a vehicle that had some catastrophic damage done to the vehicle. It is impossible to tell if the previous owner of the salvaged vehicle was someone who took care of their transmission or abused it. If the transmission came from a wrecked vehicle involved in an accident, you’ll have no idea if the impact may have caused any major damage to the transmission.
Used transmissions can also come from rental vehicles where the typical lifespan of a transmission decreases by half its normal life expectancy due to renters driving the vehicle with no regard for the transmission’s life.
Used transmissions will typically come with a 30–90-day warranty because junkyards simply don’t know if that transmission they sold you is going to last longer than that. It may be the cheapest option but it may end up being the most expensive in the short run.
